Frequency-predicted shifts independent of word-specific phonetic details

چکیده

Some sound changes seem to proceed at different rates depending on lexical frequency; these are often interpreted as reflecting phonetically detailed exemplar memories, with spreading via diffusion (Pierrehumbert 2002; Bybee 2012). However, such patterns do not necessarily require word-specific phonetic details. Variation associated frequency also exists when there is no evidence for a change in progress, which might be explained by the process of access: Higher facilitates activation, causing faster and more reduced productions (Gahl et al. 2012, Kahn & Arnold Jurafsky 2002). This work examines how repeated exposure particular words influences listeners’ category boundary between aspirated unaspirated stops those words. Listeners’ VOT lowered after shortened stimuli lengthened stimuli. These results suggest that frequency-related can largely directly influencing reduction implementation perceptual access. The size effect differed based acoustic characteristics stimuli; this may role details, but could reflect levels activation due prototypicality

Creating speaker-specific phonetic templates with a speaker-independent phonetic recognizer: implications for voice dialing

We present a new approach to speaker dependent template generation which uses dramatically less storage to represent a speaker's words, with minimal degradation in recognition accuracy. In this approach, the symbolic string produced by a speaker-independent phonetic recognizer is used to represent utterances. We investigate eeective procedures for template generation, and compare the results of...

The Effect of Using Phonetic Websites on Iranian EFL Learners’ Word Level Pronunciation

Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) is reaching an up most position in the pedagogical field of English as a Second or Foreign Language (ESL/EFL). The present study was carried out to study the effect of using phonetic websites on Iranian EFL students’ pronunciation and knowledge of phonemic symbols. Participants of the study included 30 EFL female pre-intermediate students studyin...

Lists of Spanish sentences with equivalent predictability, phonetic content, length, and frequency of the last word.

This paper presents a pool of Spanish sentences designed for use in cognitive research and speech processing in circumstances in which the effects of context are relevant. These lists of sentences are divided into six lists of 25 equivalent high-predictability sentences and six lists of 25 low-predictability sentences according to the extent to which the last word can be predicted by the preced...

Perceived phonetic details are not necessarily used in lexical acquisition

An object manipulation task was used to evaluate whether French-learning 20-month-olds use phonetic information when simultaneously learning two new name/category pairings. We explored contrasts on both consonants and vowels. Infants performed above chance level on minimal consonantal contrasts, but failed when they were presented with words differing by one of their vowels. These contrastive r...
